Mad River United Tryouts/Team Formation!!!
Recently there has been some questions and confusion about the tryouts and team formation brought to our attention.
What are Redshirt Players? Having Redshirt Players on team rosters is a new policy at MRU this season. The idea is to give players that would otherwise not make a team, the opportunity to practice for an entire season. One of the difficulties with such a small population is that there are not multiple soccer team around for players to go to if they do not make a team. By allowing them to train with a MRU team for an entire year they will be able to improve at the game. Redshirt players do not play in games, however they do have the opportunity to do so if injuries occur to other players. Redshirt players must qualify for the team they are tryout out for (score of 2.8 or better), be approved by the coach, and by the Director of Coaching/Competitive Committee. Players cannot play rec soccer and competitive soccer at the same time because players need to be registered to one specific team.

Fall 2010 Tryout Results U10-U14
Season is Summer/Fall 2010 (June 1st-November 15th)
U10 teams compete in CYSA Division 3 soccer league.
They also enter a few tournaments during the summer and fall.

How are teams formed?
Competitive Soccer: Mad River United teams are formed based on the following:

Teams will be formed based on the Mad River Evaluation System and the recommendations from the Director of Coaching to the Competitive Committee. The Mad River Evaluation system is effective in determining which soccer level each player should be playing at (D4, D3, and D1) and how each player compares to one another.

Using the MR Evaluation provides coaches an objective score in which to select players for the team they are assigned.

The situation becomes more complex when more players qualify for either D3 or D1 soccer than the roster will allow.

Generic Example: 23 players qualify for D3 soccer. Clearly this is not enough to form two teams so the question is:

How is the final roster selected?

In these particular circumstances the coach that was hired to coach this group of players will hold a Final Team Formation Tryout. Relating back to the example above, the hired coach will have all 23 players to the Final Team Formation Tryout and select a team based on the MR Evaulation System Scores and their own observations. The Director of Coaching will be present to aid in the selection of teams. The Final Team Formation Tryout does not consist of the same drills that are used during the MR System; rather each individual coach is given the freedom to choose the drills that they believe will aid them in picking a proper squad. In addition to skill and evaluation scores, coaches will be looking for positive attitude, commitment, determination, and coachability. Parents can help their players to have a better chance of making a final roster by encouraging those qualities.

In the case that there are enough players to form two D3 teams at one age level, a fair and equal draft will be used to create the two teams. The Director of Coaching must be present to oversee and approve the final draft.

Essentially, the MR Evaluation System is a way for Mad River United to objectively determine how many players are interested in playing soccer, what skills level they are, and what level different teams should be playing at. After determining this information the DOC and CC can select coaches for particular teams and move forward with Final Team Formation Tryouts if necessary.

Based on the team formation policy above, parents can expect the following over the next few weeks....
Some players will be "cut" from competitive soccer based on their tryout score. These players will be recommended to play recreational soccer for the 2010 season. Some age groups will be invited to team formation tryouts based on numbers. Other age groups will simply be divided based on the tryout results.

Over the next few weeks we will be working to finalize coaching hires so please be patient as all the loose ends are tied up.

The teams being formed are as follows:
2 U10G D3 Teams: Coached by Tim Cherms. Coached by Martin Garrett
3 U10B D3 Teams: Coached by Tim Olson. Coached by Larry Kline. Coached by TBA
2 U12B D3 Teams: Co-Coached by Heath Ford and Jason Tower. Coached by Phil Rouse
1 U12G D3 Team: Co-Coached by Dan Johnson and Joe Homem
1 U14B D1 Team: Co-Coached by Sean Connors and Duncan Robins

To determine your age division:
Your division is determined by your age as of July 31. Example if you are age 12 on July 31 you would be either U13 or U14 depending on what age group was being offered.
Mad River Youth Soccer League for Divison 1 and 3 has an Age Move-Up Policy .

Information for Fall 2008:

Mad River Youth Soccer League is offering Division 1 and Division 3 Play.
Our program is open to all age appropriate youth in Humboldt County.

1. Our Division 1 and 3 program is known as the Mad River United - We do not distinguish between Arcata and McKinleyville. We serve from Samoa to Trinidad and east to Hoopa. It is our goal to field the strongest teams possible in Division I and to field balanced teams in Division III.

2. Division 3 - We will be choosing teams through a draft system, trying to balance age and skills on each team. It is our policy to form multiple teams wherever possible. Where possible we will begin to go toward an age pure format.

3. Division 3 - If there was one team last year in a playing division and this year there are two teams, all players will be put on the table and drafted. There will be no returning squad.

4. Division 3 - As players move up in age, they will be redrafted onto teams. These players are considered returners but will not necessarily be kept together.

5. Division 1 - Players will be kept together as they move up.

Note: All Division 1 & 3 players do not automatically make a team. They must tryout each year.

All Division 4 players will be placed on a team if applications are timely.

We simply need more help from volunteers in order to continue to develop and maintain our league—with too few people doing way too many things, our burn-out rate has been severe.
